The year 2022 marks the centennial of the discovery of vitamin E, which was first described as a “hitherto unrecognized dietary factor essential for reproduction” by Evans and Bishop in a 1922 Science article.

To celebrate this anniversary, the 3^rd Vitamin E Satellite Symposium (VESS-3) “100 Years of Vitamin E” will take place on the 23^rd of August 2022 in Ghent, Belgium, as a pre-meeting of the joined conference of the Society for Free Radical Research-Europe (SFRR-E) and Plant Oxygen Group (POG) https://www.redoxbiologycongressliege.be.

As vitamin E plays a key role in the Choko-Age Project’s research activity, both the symposium and the joint conference will be a pivotal moment for promoting the Project and sharing some of its early results.

Francesco Galli, both Coordinator of the Choko-Age project and president of the organizing committee of the Symposium, commented the event: “It will be an exciting moment and th occasion to reunite the main experts and young investigators of this vitamin; we will recap main steps in the scientific history of vitamin E as well as in the discovery of its multiple roles and applications in human nutrition and medicine.”

Vitamin E Satellite Symposia (VESS) are organized by the initiative of members of SFRR-E in collaboration with colleagues of other international scientific organizations and research centers active in the fields of redox biology and free radical research, with the aim to unite the community of scientists interested in the study of this vitamin, to summarize the state-of-the-art knowledge, and to propose novel directions for future research.

The first VESS was held in Rome in 2009 and the second in Stuttgart 2015. The third VESS is not simply the “next in line”, since it will celebrate “100 years of vitamin E”.

The symposium will be an exciting meeting in which to celebrative moments of the history of this vitamin will combine with an outline of emerging projects and new lines of research in the area of human nutrition, biochemistry and metabolism of lipids, plant biology, translational research and innovation in the area of drug discovery, and food and cosmetic industry.

• 9:20 – Plenary lecture “100 years of vitamin E – A historical tour throughout the scientific milestones of vitamin E”
• 9:45 – Consensus proposal: The non-vitamin E forms of tocopherols: is there a need for a new
  nomenclature of vitamin E?
• 9:50 – Presentation of the candidatures of “Vitamin E pioneers”
• 10:00 – 11:45 – Invited communications 1 (including a 20 min coffee break):
  • The antioxidant paradigm of vitamin E revisited 100 years after
  • Vitamin E: gene regulation function and lipid metabolism
  • Vitamin E metabolism, inflammatory pathways and gut microbiota
  • Vitamin E and immunity
• 11:45 – 13:00 – Selected oral communications (4 from young investigators + 2 from sponsors)
• 13:00 -14:30 Lunch break and poster session
• 14:30 – 16:30 – Invited communications 2 (including a 20 min coffee break):
  • Vitamin E, membrane lipid signaling and ferroptosis
  • Vitamin E metabolites as bioactive molecules
  • Natural Vitamin E and vitamin E metabolism in plant organisms
  • Emerging clinical applications of vitamin E – NASH and other liver and gastro-intestinal diseases
    (including those involving the gut-liver axis)
  • Emerging clinical applications of vitamin E – Immune function in the elderly
• 16:30 – 18:00 – Selected oral communications (4-5 from young investigators + 2-3 from sponsors)
• 18:00 – 19:00 – Award ceremony: “Vitamin E Pioneers” and “Young investigator awards” – round table discussion: “The next 100 years of vitamin E”
• 19:00 – Closing Ceremony
